POSEIDON SUMMER SCHOOL

June, 18-22 2017

The Poseidon Summer School took place in San Martino di Castrozza (TN), Italy, on June 18th -22nd 2017. The Summer School was organized jointly by CLIVET and WARRANTRAINING with the support of PROTOLAB and the involvement of POSEIDON partners (ARC, CATLAB, METROHM APPLIKON and UPPSALA UNIVERSITET) as lecturers.

The aim of the Summer School “Photonics for Health” was at focusing on different applications of photonic devices on theme “Health” and at disseminating the results of some European Projects, giving information about the most recent and relevant research topics. The class topics will contain basic photonics components, related technologies and design methods. Photonics was presented as the basis and the core technology but speakers covered multidisciplinary know-how including competences:

  • Microfluidics
  • Biochemistry
  • Engineering
  • System integration

The lectures were organized in two sessions during the day: first, general overviews were presented by key-note scientists and European industry leaders; then, case studies from EU funded projects and more applicative issues were showcased. Daily tours at open air and relaxing moments were offered to enjoy participants’ stay and to forge new relationships among participants.

The school was addressed to young researchers and scientists (PhD students, Master Graduating students, early-stage researchers and future European entrepreneurs) in the field of Photonics related to Health domain, with 56 attendees.

The school involved both academic and industrial partners as well as seven invited speakers: Daniel Aili (Linköping University), Serena Bovetti (Italian Institute of Technology), Cuong Cao (Queen’s University), Leandro Lorenzelli (Foundation Bruno Kessler), Pietro Parisse (Elettra Sincrotrone), Felix Piat (Prestodiag) and Filippo Romanato (Padova University & Italian National Council of Research-IOM).

The Summer School was also proposed as an exchange of ideas and achieved results of other European funded projects in the field of Photonics for Health domain. These projects were:

Cindy Rechner and Roland Terborg introduce RAIS project at Poseidon Summer School 2017

RAIS: Scalable, point-of-care and label-free microarray platform for rapid detection of Sepsis. (http://www.rais-project.eu/)

RAIS project participated with the presentation of the project with 4 speakers: Roland Terborg (Institute of Photonic Science, Spain), Filiz Yesilköy (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland), Maria Carmen Estevez (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia, Spain) and Mathieu Rabaey (Trinean, Belgium).

Saphely: Self-amplified photonic biosensing platform for microRNA-based early diagnosis of diseases (https://saphely.eu/)

Phocnosis: Advanced nanophotonic point-of-care analysis device for fast and early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (https://phocnosis.eu/)

Saphely and Phocnosis projects were presented by Prof. Jaime Garcia Rupérez (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain) who is the coordinator of both.

Symphony: Integrated SYsteM based on PHOtonic Microresonators and Microfluidic Components for rapid detectioN of toxins in milk and dairY products (http://www.symphony-project.eu/)

Symphony project was presented by Prof. Leandro Lorenzelli (Foundation Bruno Kessler, Italy) who is the Coordinator of the project.

The conclusion of the Summer School took place on 22nd June 2017 at CLIVET S.P.A with the graduation and the visit to the establishment.
